CDC – National Center for Health Statistics – Online Publications CSV to Interactive DataTable Tool

While working as a Web Master / Developer / Designer for the CDC / National Center for Health Statistics / Office of Information Services (OIS) at the headquarters in Hyattsville, MD I created this “CDC NCHS – Online Publications – CSV to Interactive DataTable Tool” which is an interactive tool that I envisioned, proposed, created, and implemented for the CDC NCHS as a better way to organize, display, search, and interact with the various health data publications that are disseminated by the CDC NCHS. Whereas previously the NCHS simply listed all of their health data publications as a static numbered list going down a webpage with links to PDF and webpage versions of each publication. When I came to the NCHS I envisioned a better way to display and interact with this these types of publications by placing them into interactive DataTables that could be sorted, filtered, and searched using various UI / UX methods that were programmatically controlled and I proposed this to management which was approved and I then implemented my engineered solution across all of the major health data publications offered by the CDC NCHS which is still in use today.

Task

While working as a Web Developer / Designer for the CDC NCHS I proposed a better and more efficent way to display and interact with the various health data publications that were being disseminated by the CDC NCHS by placing them into interactive jQuery DataTables which I customized by having multiple meetings and presentations with decision makers to determine what kinds of filters and options should be included in the implementation. I also engineered the solution so that the full lists of these publications which was very extensive going back decades and included thousands of individual publications could be sourced for the DataTable not by code on the webpage but rather by specifically encoded CSV databases that the customized jQuery and Javascript code I engineered would then transform into HTML and interactive entries within the DataTables. This would allow for easy updating to the DataTables simply by adding to the CSV databases as well as a way to easily keep all of the entires in centralized database locations. I then customized the UI / UX for seamless integration into the CDC NCHS website and implemented the solution into production which is still being used by the CDC NCHS today. This received positive feedback from the NCHS Director as well as the head of the NCHS Office of Information Services (OIS).
